Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s acknowledgment that the ISIL terrorists in Iraq pose a threat to the US and its allies is “ironic” as the country helped to produce the “monster,” a political analyst says.
“I’m glad that Secretary Hagel recognizes that ISIL is a threat to the United States and it is certainly ironic that we helped to produce this monster,” former US Senate Foreign Policy Analyst James George Jatras told Press TV on Thursday.
“Unfortunately, it’s not very surprising that the United States over the last 25 years has a policy very consistently in Afghanistan, in Bosnia, Kosovo, Libya, Syria, now standing the border between Syria and Iraq helping to bring into existence these terrible jihad radicals that we think we can use as a foreign policy tool and then instead come back to bite us,” he added.
“This is a threat to our country,» Hagel said during a meeting with US troops at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in the US state of Georgia.
«This is a force that is sophisticated. It’s dynamic, it’s strong, it’s organized, it’s well-financed, it’s competent, [ISIL]. And it is a threat to our allies all over the Middle East. It’s a threat to Europe. It’s a threat to every stabilized country on Earth, and it’s a threat to us,» he declared.
According to media reports, the Takfiri ISIL militants, who are wreaking havoc in Iraq, were trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012. The reports said that they were trained at the time as part of covert aid to the militants operating inside Syria.
“I welcome the secretary’s recognition that this is a danger, but this is a kind of thing perhaps we should think of in advance,” the analyst concluded.
