Eleven years after the US-led invasion of Iraq and 3 years into the war on Syria, the extremist group ISIL has launched a bloody invasion campaign in Iraq.
ISIL militants took control over Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq, as well other large chunks of territory in the western part of the country.
Summary executions and other acts of violence prompted hundreds of thousands to flee Mosul with residents of other cities worrying whether they will be next.
The government of Iraq has made significant progress in its fight against ISIL and retook many of the territories occupies by the terrorists.
