Iran concerned about terrorism spread in Mideast

Iran-Foreign-MinistryIran has expressed misgivings over the expansion of terrorism in the Middle East region, saying this scourge is being used as a means to overcome the nations’ votes.

“Causing insecurity, disrupting democratic trends, overcoming ballot boxes, imposing weapons and terror rather than [promoting] democratic trends, all of these suggest that terrorism is being used today as a tool to overcome people’s votes,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said at her weekly press conference in Tehran on Wednesday.

It is a matter of concern that certain countries and circles are using terrorism as a lever to achieve their ominous interests and objectives in the region, she added.

“Insecurity and the expansion of terrorism and terrorist goals in different countries have raised deep concern,” the Iranian spokesperson reiterated.

She emphasized that Iran has always expressed its misgivings over the spread of terrorist activities in the Middle East, saying terrorism would not be confined to one particular region.

She added that Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and many other countries are facing the scourge of terrorism.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran condemns the ominous phenomenon of terrorism and believes the first method to counter and eradicate it is for the regional nations to remain vigilant and for countries to boost national unity, and for the international community to pay serious and unbiased attention to this scourge facing the human community,” she noted.

She called for putting an end to dual approaches to terrorism and emphasized that global terrorism must be stopped through a universal solution and collective will.

Afkham’s remarks came as Iraq has been witnessing a fresh wave of violence fueled by the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) Takfiri terrorists since June 10. The militants have been operating in the Iraqi provinces of Nineveh, Diyala, Salahuddin and al-Anbar.

The ISIL Takfiri terrorists – aided by senior military commanders from Iraq’s Ba’ath party who back slain Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein — have occupied vast areas of Iraqi territories, displaced hundreds of thousands of people, killed hundreds and ruined cities.

Syria has also been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. Over 160,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the violence fueled by the foreign-backed militants.

Lebanon has also been suffering terrorist attacks carried out by al-Qaeda-linked militant groups, as well as random rocket attacks, which are viewed as a spillover of violence from neighboring Syria.
