Russia has accused Ukraine of violating the Fourth Geneva Convention on protecting civilians in wartime by killing peaceful citizens amid Kiev’s military operation against pro-Russia activists.
The Russian Investigative Committee said in a statement on Friday that Ukrainian forces have been killing and wounding peaceful citizens in their fight against pro-Russians in the country’s southern and eastern regions.
The committee said the civilian deaths are in “breach of the Geneva Convention of 1949 on protecting the civilian population in time of war.”
In addition, the Investigative Committee said the country’s armed forces, National Guard and the Right Sector ultra-nationalist group are committing the alleged crimes. «Those guilty of the deaths of peaceful civilians and children according to all the canons of international law must bear responsibility for this,» the Russian Investigative Committee added.
This comes as media reports say more residents of the eastern Donetsk city of Slavyansk are forced to escape from the city amid an escalation of fighting between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russia activists.
The city has seen repeated clashes in recent weeks, with residential areas coming under mortar attack by Ukraine’s government forces. The random shelling and stray bullets have already killed dozens of civilians.
The acting Kiev government has been staging military operations in the southern and eastern regions since mid-April in a bid to root out pro-Russian protests.
Ukraine’s President-elect Petro Poroshenko said earlier in the week that he rules out negotiating with the pro-Russia activists, vowing to continue the military operations in the country’s southeastern provinces.
