French rally against anti-immigration party win

franceFrench demonstrators have taken to the streets of the capital Paris and several other cities to protest against the victory of the anti-immigration National Front (FN) party in the recent European Parliament elections.

On Thursday, student protesters and rights activists alongside other people chanted slogans against the FN policies.

Protest organizers said the extreme policies of the far-right party could threaten democracy.

«We respect the result of the European elections, of democracy, but we do not accept the values of the National Front,» media outlets quoted Silvio Philippe, one of the organizers of the rally in Lyon, as saying, adding that «French democracy is in danger.»

The anti-EU party won a nationwide election for the first time and took 24 of France’s 74 seats in the new European Parliament.

The party led by Marine Le Pen wants France to quit the euro and reinstate national border controls.

The party’s view against Muslim immigration to France has sparked concern among the country’s large immigrant population.

This comes as French Prime Minister Manuel Valls has described the French far-right eurosceptic party’s triumph in the elections as “a shock.”

“Until unemployment falls, until purchasing power rises, until taxes fall, the French won’t believe us,” Valls said on Monday.

Since May 2012, when President Francois Hollande came to power, the total number of jobseekers in the eurozone’s second-largest economy has soared by about 440,000.

A survey by pollster OpinionWay indicated in January that some 82 percent of the French are not satisfied with Hollande’s handling of the economic and social issues, compared to 16 percent who support his performance.

Anti-EU parties have seen gains not only in France but also in Britain, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Greece.
