Poroshenko: No talks with pro-Russia protesters

poroshenkoPetro Poroshenko, who exit polls have shown is the new Ukrainian president, says he will not negotiate with pro-Russian protesters until they lay down their arms.

The exit polls from Sunday’s presidential election in Ukraine, conducted by three Ukrainian survey agencies, showed that the 48-year-old candy tycoon has gained nearly 56 percent of the votes.

Poroshenko said that after taking office he will put an end to the war and bring peace back to the country.

He also said that the first place he will visit will be Ukraine’s troubled eastern regions, where government forces are fighting with pro-Russian activists.

Poroshenko also states that he would not recognize referendums held in Donetsk , Lugansk and Crimea.

On May 12, Ukraine’s eastern regions of Donetsk and Lugansk declared independence following local referendums in which the regions’ residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence from Kiev. The referendums followed a similar vote in Crimea in March that led to the unification of the region with the Russian Federation.

Voters in Ukraine went to the polls earlier in the day to choose a new president with eighteen candidates running for the position.

The election comes after months of political crisis, which erupted last November when now-ousted president, Viktor Yanukovych, refrained from signing an association agreement with the EU in favor of closer ties with Russia.

The refusal triggered months of unrest, which finally led to the ouster of Yanukovych on February 23, who then left the country for Russia.
