Rachel Corrie’s family appeals Israel ruling

corrieThe family of an American girl killed by Israeli forces has appealed to Israel’s Supreme Court.

They appealed on Wednesday after a lower court in 2012 refused to hold the Israeli military accountable for their daughter’s death.

Rachel Corrie, a pro-Palestinian activist, was crushed to death by an Israeli military bulldozer in 2003.

She was defending a Palestinian home from being demolished in the town of Rafah in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The lower court cleared the military from all wrongdoings. The Israeli military claims the driver of the bulldozer could not have seen Rachel, although she was dressed in fluorescent orange vest at the time of the incident.

According to other activists who were present at the scene of the tragic death, Rachel was clearly visible to the driver of the bulldozer.

Pointing to multiple factors including a disregard for international humanitarian law, Rachel’s father believes that the immunity of Israeli soldiers needs to be challenged.

«You put these things together, and what you have are the pillars that hold up the continued immunity that the Israeli… forces have for their actions,» Craig Corrie, Rachel’s father, said, adding, «That needs to be challenged.»

Rachel’s death has inspired many international rights activists to go to the Gaza Strip.

More than half a million Israelis live in illegal settlements built since Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East al-Quds in 1967.

The Israeli settlements are considered illegal by much of the international community. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the settlement construction is part of Tel Aviv’s policy and will not stop.
