Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk says he is against the hasty replacement of the country’s national currency with the euro, as Poland is doing better economically than the eurozone.
Tusk said on Wednesday that he opposes the country’s quick adoption of the euro because the Polish economy is doing better than the single-currency bloc.
The Polish premier added that in recent years the country has managed to cope with the financial crisis better than the eurozone.
Furthermore, Tusk said the eastern European country would only adopt the euro “when circumstances show without doubt that the move is safe for the Poles.»
According to estimates, the Polish economy is to expand 2.9 percent in 2014, compared with 1.7 percent for the 18-member bloc.
Poland joined the European Union in 2004, though there is no set date for when the country is to enter the eurozone.
Europe is struggling with an economic crisis that erupted in early 2008, leaving millions unemployed and in financial distress.
According to the European Commission, 24 percent of the entire EU population, or more than 120 million people, are either in poverty or at risk of falling into poverty.
The worsening debt crisis has forced EU governments to adopt harsh austerity measures and tough economic reforms, which have triggered massive protests in many European countries.
